Credits Are Not Optional

Who made the picture, and why the caption is part of the work

Credits Are Not Optional

A single editorial frame can hold the work of nine people. The photographer is usually the only one named, and the rest are absorbed into the image as if clothes styled themselves.

Credit in full, in order, every time: photography, styling, hair, makeup, nails, set design, casting, production, and the maker of every garment shown. Model names are not decoration; they are the person in the picture.

Credit the making as well as the shoot. If a bodice took eleven days and three pairs of hands, the atelier belongs in the caption. Craft that goes unnamed becomes invisible, and invisible work is easier to underpay.

Write alt text as if the reader cannot see the frame, because some readers cannot. Describe what is there, not what it means.

Our editing rule is simple: no story publishes with a blank credit field. If a name is missing we ask, and if we cannot confirm it we say so rather than guess.
